This installment in the series does far more to progress the characters of Ylva and her friends then previous ones have. The emotional bonds get deeper, just as the twists get darker. Their time trapped in the bunker changed them, and Ylva still feels on the outside. In spite of her deepening relationship with her roommate, she’s alone, outside the culture of the Wild Children and not sure how to get back into their own good graces. The death of their friend may not have been so accidental after all, and even a sworn enemy comes to see Ylva in a different light.
I appreciated the emotional growth of the characters here. We finally feel as if Ylva is invested emotionally in what’s happening at the Afterlife Academy, that things are deeper than superficial. And I look forward to seeing what’s going to happen next.
