It’s not something that a lot of people think about. However, about 10 years ago when an author who was hosting websites for people went AWOL, many authors lost their sites. They were out of luck, because they didn’t think about what would happen if they needed to change hosting.

I’m hearing other stories of authors having a difficult time moving domains and sites from other people holding them. So I figure it’s time to revisit this topic.

If you think that this doesn’t apply to you because you’re with, Wix, or Weebly, you’re wrong.

It doesn't matter where your website is hosted. You should always make sure you know how to get out. Click To Tweet

Next is the site itself. Do you have full administrative control to export your site contents and import them to a new platform? Do you have cpanel access to set up emails and make changes and even grab entire backups?

These things are just as important. There are many reputable companies out there, even ones run by one or two people; however, you don’t ever want to leave such information to chance.

If you had to move your site tomorrow, do you know when/how? Do you have an “out” if your current hosting no longer meets your needs?

My Author Home provides cpanel access and full administrative access to our hosted customers. Our free website customers can use the built-in backup plugin to export/backup their entire site. Any domains we register are done so with a reputable, national (international actually) company, and it is suggested you take full control of your domain, but can add us as an administrator if you’d like us to handle settings changes, etc.
